“Dairy Permeate Powder” as an Imported Food Without National Food Safety Standards

On March 6, 2020, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment solicited public opinions on the proposal of importing “Dairy Permeate Powder” as an Imported Food without Governing National Food Safety Standards. The deadline for feedback is April 5, 2020.

 

As of now, China has approved only Tequila 100% Agave can be imported in accordance with Imported Foods without Governing National Food Safety Standards. (Announcement on Administrating Tequila 100% Agave in Accordance with Import Foods without Governing National Safety Standards (No 6 [2013])).

 

Antion has found that application of “Dairy Permeate Powder” as an imported food without national food safety standards is a part of Trade Agreement between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the United States of America. If it is formally approved, it will become the second imported food without national food safety standards approved by China.

 

The proposed implement standard indicates that it is only applicable to “Dairy Permeate Powder” derived from whey and cow milk that produced in the U.S., and it also known as dairy solids (whey or cow milk source) or milk permeate powder (whey or cow milk source), the lactose content (on a dry basis) should be 76 g/100g, and ash should be 12.0 g/100g. And the standard also points out that food additives must not be added in Dairy Permeate Powder, and the statement of Not suitable for direct consumption should be marked on the labeling.
